Estrus Synchronization

Eazi-Breed™ CIDR Cattle Insert

Eazi-Breed CIDR Cattle Insert The Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert is another valuable management tool for estrous synchronization for dairy and beef heifers and cows. The Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert first developed in New Zealand dramatically improves reproductive success by allowing producers to breed more cattle in less time. Used in breeding programs with Lutalyse® Sterile Solution the Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert helps control the estrous cycle producing tighter estrous synchronization and induced cyclicity in some anestrous animals. The Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert is a T-shaped device that is impregnated with progesterone. Placed in the vagina of the animal the Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert releases progesterone until it is removed seven days later. Removing the Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert on Day 7 following a 5 mL injection of Lutalyse® on Day 6 causes a drop in progesterone which triggers estrus and ovulation.

There are a wide variety of products available for use as soaps, sanitizers, and disinfectants. All commercially available products have been tested to some degree and any claims of "antibacterial, sporacidal, virucidal, or fungicidal activity" must be demonstrated to some degree before marketing the product.

It is important to evaluate any products selected for use in the dairy for performance under "on-farm" conditions and to also consider econmy, safety, efficacy, the spectrum of activity against a wide variety of microorganisms, and any environmental concerns with use on and around livestock and humans.

Nolvalube® is an obstetrical lubricant containing Nolvasan® disinfectant (0.1% chlorhexidine acetate). It is supplied ready-to-use as a non-greasy, and non-irritating formulation. It will not injure rubber appliances or surgical instruments, retains its efficacy in the presence of organic matter such as manure, urine, dirt, blood, serum, and body oils, has a proven ability to bind to skin proteins and retain residual activity for as long as 48 hours following application. Nolvalube® is safe for all obstetrical applications.

In a recent study, "Using Controlled Internal Drig Release (CIDR) Inserts for Estrus Synchronization in Dairy Heifers"; A.K. McLean, W.M. Graves, R.C. Smith, B.C. Lance, and L.E. McKee of the University of Georgia, Athens evaluated times insemination protocols in dairy heifers.

The 164 dairy heifers taking part in the reproduction experiment with CIDRs were evaluated for the effect of lubricants on vaginal discharge and pregnancy rate.

  • Lubricants were applied to the CIDR insertion device when inserting CIDR into animals.
  • CIDR insertion devices were dipped in a properly dluted Nolvasan® solution (1 oz./gallon), excess fluid was shaken off, and the devices were wiped with a single use towel between heifers in the Safe Lube treatment group.
  • CIDR insertion devices were wiped only and more Nolvalube® was added between heifers in the Nolvalube® treatment group.

Lubricants were randomized between animals such that Safe Lube used with 81 heifers and Nolvalube® was used with 83 heifers.

The authors report, "Nolvalube® was much faster for inserting CIDRs, with the same cost, less discharge, and more heifers bred."

An Increase of 8.7% in pregnancy rate was obtained in heifers whose CIDR insertion devices were lubricated with Nolvalube® as compared to heifers whose CIDR insertion devices were lubricated with a non-disinfectant lubricant.
