Accelerated Genetics Awards Scholarships to Enthusiastic Youth (5/15/07)

Every year Accelerated Genetics awards scholarships to youth both just entering and already enrolled in college in the agricultural field. Youth are the foundation of the future of the agricultural industry and Accelerated Genetics wants to ensure that the next generation is well prepared.

Four $500.00 scholarships are awarded to youth just graduating from high school and beginning college. The 2007 recipients are Megan Herberg of St. Peter, Minnesota; Ashley Sears of South Deerfield, Massachusetts; Brittany Pearson of Millbury, Massachusetts; and Matthew Mitchell of LaFollette, Tennessee.

Megan Herberg plans to attain two degrees while in college, one in Dairy Science and another in Agricultural Business, with a minor in Spanish. By combining these degrees with the priceless experiences she has had, she feels she will be a strong candidate to work in the dairy industry and eventually return to the home farm as a fifth generation member.

Ashley Sears has been accepted to attend Cornell University where she plans to pursue a degree in Agricultural Business. Her long-term goal is to obtain a Law degree with a concentration in agricultural policy and to continue developing her registered Guernsey and Holstein herd.

Brittany Pearson has the vision of becoming a Veterinarian. She plans to attend Cornell University where she will major in Animal Science/Pre-Vet Medicine. After her residency, she would like to open her own veterinary practice for large animals, in addition to returning to her family’s farm, making her dreams into reality.

Matthew Mitchell plans to one day operate a herd of registered Holsteins that can be competitive in both the show and sale ring. Three years ago, he started milking his own small herd of cows and this year plans to attend college to further his agricultural education. Matthew will be attending Roane State Community College for the first two years and then transfer to the University of Tennessee to complete a degree in Animal Science.

Two $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled in agricultural programs at college. Accelerated Genetics works with the National FFA organization to select these students and the 2007 recipients are Cody Dix of Stockton, Kansas and Londa Johnson of LaCrescent, Minnesota. Cody Dix is attending the Colby Community College in Kansas. He is majoring in Animal Nutrition. Londa Johnson is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and is majoring in Dairy Science.
