Black Joker one of the Simmental breed’s most influential sires of the past decade passed away on August 15 2006.
Black Joker was bred by Pineview and Bell Farms Burlington NC. He burst onto the scene as the High Selling Bull of the 1997 Optimal Beef Genetics Bull Sale where he sold to Breinig Simmentals Arapahoe NE for $11250. Shortly thereafter he was leased to Accelerated Genetics Baraboo WI.
Black Joker went directly into stud where he was an outstanding semen producer. He returned to Breinig Simmentals for natural service the summer of 1998. He went on to be shown at the 1998 Nebraska State Fair where he was selected as the Grand Champion Bull.
His show career culminated in 1999 as he was named Senior Champion at the National Western Stock Show Denver CO and Grand Champion of the Dixie National Livestock Show Jackson MS and the Houston Livestock Show Houston TX. Following his successful show career he returned to stud.
The mark of a great sire is the performance of his progeny. Black Joker will go down in history of one of the most prominent sires of his generation. Black Joker has sired more show champions and sale toppers than nearly all of his contemporaries. His offspring claimed championships at Denver Louisville the Simmental Sweepstake the National Classic and numerous State and Local Fairs.
The value of his offspring whether in the pasture feedlot or show ring kept Black Joker on most breeders list as a “tried and true” sire. One of the highest accuracy sires in the breed Black Joker has earned the distinction as a superior maternal sire. He is a Trait Leader for Milk and Maternal Weaning Weight and ranks in the Top 25% of the breed for Stayability.
Furthermore he is one of the breed’s top sires for carcass merit. He is a Trait Leader for Ribeye Area ranking in the Top 1%. In addition he ranks in the Top 20% for Tenderness and Yield Grade and the Top 15% for Carcass Weight
Being homozygous polled and homozygous black he corrected many of the cosmetic problems in the Simmental breed. His popularity grew in the breed were he was the Number 1 sire for registration in 2003 and 2004 and continues today as one of the most widely used bulls in the breed.
